I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.1 this afternoon. The performance is better than advertised. The whole process took about thirty minutes, even with switching system sound from OSS to ALSA.
Debian users will want to use the `alsa-base’ and `alsa-tools’ packages from the `testing’ pool.
KernelTrap has the lowdown on how to upgrade to the new 2.6.x kernels. It’s a lot simpler than it used to be. make mrproper ; make ; make install After that, just make sure lilo points in the right direction and you’re good to go.
Debian, a Custom Kernel, and ALSA helped me figure out how to get sound working under alsa. It was relatively painless, not at all like what I’d expected from what I’ve read in various forums.
Another neat aspect of the 2.6.x series kernel is that the `ide-scsi’ module is no longer required to burn cds. In fact Linus vehemently recommends against it!
I was using gcombust to burn CDs but it doesn’t support the ATAPI interface, however, XCDRoast does, no need to fall back to the command-line unless you’re absolutely a masochist.
